Tammara Thibeault’s boxing journey has been a lesson in staying focused on the present moment. When her career-defining bout arrived on August 8, she approached it one round at a time. It wasn’t until a few days later, holding the belts in her hands, that the full impact of her achievement sank in.

In a match held in Orlando, Florida, the 29-year-old from Shawinigan, Quebec, secured a victory over Australia’s Desley Robinson through a unanimous decision, with all three judges scoring the fight 100-90. This win marked Thibeault as the first Canadian woman to attain the status of a unified professional world champion, claiming Robinson’s IBF and WBO middleweight titles in addition to the prestigious Ring Magazine belt.

Remarkably, Thibeault accomplished this feat in just five professional fights, setting a record for the fewest fights required in history to clinch a Ring Magazine world championship. Her ability to remain focused throughout the match was evident as she overcame a challenging moment when she suffered significant bleeding from a headbutt but maintained control to secure the win.

Thibeault, while pursuing her professional career, made a return to Olympic-style boxing in late 2021. She showcased her skills by winning a Canadian amateur title in November and attaining a silver medal at the Boxing World Cup in Guiyang, China, in June. Training alongside national-team boxers from India and New Zealand in Belfast provided her with valuable experience against diverse boxing styles.

Embracing the creative freedom that professional boxing offers, Thibeault expressed her fondness for the unique outfits she gets to wear in the ring. While representing Canada remains a source of pride, professional boxing allows her to exhibit more of her personality, showcasing who she is and what she stands for.

Despite her recent world championship success, Thibeault remains focused on her goal of competing in the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics, recognizing the need to earn her spot on the Olympic podium. Her experience in the 2024 Olympics, where she left without a medal, has fueled her determination to excel in both her professional and Olympic boxing careers.

The overwhelming support and positive reactions to Thibeault’s victory have been a humbling experience for her. Encouraging young athletes, she emphasizes the importance of perseverance and self-belief, urging them not to give up despite challenges and setbacks.

Looking ahead, Thibeault’s upcoming major event is the Pan American championships in October in Pueblo, Mexico. Prioritizing rest and recovery after her recent triumph, she aims to approach future challenges with a refreshed mindset, taking them on one step at a time. Thibeault’s achievements may have elevated her status in the boxing world, but her approach remains unchanged – focused on tackling each challenge as it comes and striving for continued success.
