Thousands of British households are set to receive a complimentary £150 credit from their energy provider this month. Utilita has commenced the distribution of the Warm Home Discount funds to smart prepay customers on January 7, aiming to finalize the payments for all recipients by the end of the month.
The Warm Home Discount scheme offers a £150 benefit credited directly to the electricity account of eligible households, rather than as a cash deposit into their bank accounts. To qualify for this scheme, individuals must have been receiving specific benefits as of August 24, 2025, which serves as the qualifying date for this winter.
Residents in England and Wales will automatically receive the Warm Home Discount, while in Scotland, automatic payment is only applicable to those receiving the Guarantee Credit component of Pension Credit. For other eligible benefits, manual application through the energy supplier is required, as the scheme is not available in Northern Ireland.
The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) has announced the removal of the high energy use requirement for the Warm Home Discount in England and Wales. Previously, applicants had to demonstrate high energy costs to qualify, but this criterion has now been eliminated.
DESNZ estimates a potential increase of 2.7 million households receiving the discount, with the total number rising to an estimated 6.1 million. Concurrently, energy bills have risen, with the Ofgem price cap for a typical dual fuel household paying by direct debit increasing from £1,755 to £1,758.
Households on a standard variable rate (SVR) tariff are covered by the Ofgem price cap, with charges based on actual energy consumption. The price cap sets limits on gas and electricity unit charges, as well as fixed daily standing charges for energy network connections, reflecting the expected annual costs for typical energy usage.
