The BBC issued an apology to former President Donald Trump regarding the alteration of his speech preceding the January 6, 2021, riot at the Capitol. The edited footage was featured in a 2024 Panorama episode, with the BBC acknowledging it as an error in judgment. A spokesperson for the BBC stated that the edited content would not be aired again in its current form on any BBC platforms.
In response to a letter from President Trump’s legal team, the BBC’s lawyers and Chair, Samir Shah, sent correspondences expressing regret for the edit. The BBC affirmed that the documentary ‘Trump: A Second Chance?’ would not be rebroadcast on any BBC platforms. While regretting the editing of the video clip, the BBC maintained its stance that there was no grounds for a defamation lawsuit.
President Trump had threatened a billion-dollar lawsuit over the editing but the BBC opted not to engage in a public dispute with him. Trump, speaking on Fox News, stated his intention to sue the organization, citing the dishonest editing of the footage. However, legal experts raised doubts about the likelihood of Trump succeeding in a court case, especially as the Panorama episode was not accessible in Florida where the legal action was initiated.
Trump received criticism for his response to the Capitol riot, where his supporters breached the building during the certification of the 2020 Presidential Election results.
