On National Acadian Day last year, Alexis Belliveau sought an Acadian flag emoji for a social media post but found it nonexistent. Emojis are symbols used in messages to convey emotions or ideas, with numerous flag options available. Collaborating with Julien Robichaud, Belliveau is preparing a proposal for an Acadian flag emoji to be submitted to Unicode, a California-based organization that reviews and approves emoji proposals.
Belliveau emphasized the significance of expressing Acadian pride digitally, aiming to engage younger generations in Acadian culture. To support their submission, Belliveau and Robichaud launched a campaign featuring a website detailing Acadian history, flag symbolism, and a petition with over 10,000 signatures.
Despite the absence of an official Acadian flag emoji, people have creatively used emoji sequences to showcase their Acadian heritage. Belliveau believes their proposed emoji, combining a star and the French flag emoji, offers a unique solution. Unicode’s criteria for approving emojis include distinctiveness, global usage, versatility, and applicability in sentences.
Belliveau plans to spread awareness among Acadians worldwide and submit the proposal in the upcoming winter season. He aims to reach Acadian communities in various regions, including Louisiana, France, Quebec, and across Canada, highlighting the global presence of Acadian culture.
