Iran has vowed to retaliate against the recent expansion of U.S. sanctions targeting its economy. The country expressed confidence that key trading partners would resist the pressure exerted by Washington. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent unveiled the measures, which fell short of the harshest sanctions, almost six months into the ongoing conflict that the U.S. has been struggling to resolve.

Despite facing decades of U.S. and international sanctions that have significantly impacted its economy, Iran remains resilient. In response to the new U.S. economic measures, Iran threatened military action and the further reduction of oil exports from the Gulf. Iranian Economy Minister Ali Madanizadeh stated that Iran was prepared to defend itself aggressively, indicating a shift from a defensive stance.

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps spokesperson, Brig.-Gen. Hossein Mohebbi, warned of significant retaliation against U.S. interests and energy chokepoints if Iran’s infrastructure is endangered. The announcement of the expanded sanctions coincided with the Iranian rial hitting a record low, worsening the economic challenges already faced by the country.

The cost of daily essentials in Iran has soared, with rice prices up by around 60% and beef prices over 150% higher since the conflict began. The International Monetary Fund projects a contraction of more than five percent in Iran’s gross domestic product. Despite the current economic turmoil, Iran remains defiant in the face of external pressure.

China, one of Iran’s major oil buyers, emphasized that its cooperation with Iran adheres to international law and should not be disrupted. The U.S. Treasury Department imposed new sanctions on individuals, entities, and vessels, excluding Chinese financial institutions suspected of facilitating Iran’s oil trade from the list. While warning about the repercussions of trading with Iran, Bessent refrained from specifying a timeline or identifying potential targets, aiming to allow countries time to comply with the directives.

The situation remains tense, with no clear signs of a diplomatic resolution in sight. Iran’s ability to disrupt oil tankers and threaten its neighbors persists, while the status of its nuclear program, a target for the U.S. and Israel, remains uncertain. The conflict has resulted in casualties and significant military and economic challenges for Iran, with the country’s leadership responding with a mix of defiance and preparedness for potential escalation.
