Comedian Liz Miele has experienced a significant drop in her earnings, mirroring the plight of many others in her field. SiriusXM recently discontinued its Raw Comedy/Raw Dog channel, which showcased over 800 comedians, and replaced it with a new channel overseen by renowned comedian Sebastian Maniscalco.

This change has left Miele and numerous other comedians without a crucial source of income and visibility, as established celebrity comics now dominate the airwaves. Miele shared how Sirius XM helped her financially during challenging times, emphasizing the impact on fellow comedians who rely on this platform to sustain themselves.

While Maniscalco and SiriusXM have pledged to offer opportunities to comedians at various career stages, industry watchdog Stand Up for Standup reveals a contrasting reality. Prior to the transition, Raw Comedy showcased over 800 comedians monthly, each earning $15 in royalties per performance. However, the revamped channel featured only 275 comedians the following month, with the top 50 artists receiving more than 75% of airtime, including well-known names like Chris Rock and Kevin Hart.

Miele expressed concern over this “concentration of wealth,” noting the shift from a diverse range of comedians earning decent royalties to a select group making substantial profits. She highlighted the implications for emerging comedians, fearing that without platforms like SiriusXM, aspiring talents may struggle to gain recognition and success.

Toronto comedian Danish Anwar disclosed a significant decrease in royalties following the channel change, affecting his income and that of his peers. Many Canadian comedians, particularly those building careers in the U.S., rely on SiriusXM royalties to maintain their work visas, raising uncertainties about their future prospects.

High-profile comedians, including Patton Oswalt and Michelle Wolf, have urged Maniscalco to prioritize opportunities for up-and-coming talents on the new channel. Despite Maniscalco distancing himself from the decision to discontinue Raw Comedy, reassurances have been made about fostering diverse voices in comedy.

The situation has prompted reflections on past advocacy efforts in the Canadian comedy scene, where collective action led to positive outcomes. While uncertainties persist, there is a call for unity within the comedy industry to address issues of fair pay and treatment, providing a potential silver lining in an otherwise challenging landscape.
