Anna Huang’s performance at the CPKC Women’s Open last year marked a significant turning point in her golfing journey. Coming off a series of missed cuts as a 16-year-old in Mississauga, Ont., Huang was at a crossroads in her career.
Reflecting on that challenging period, Huang admitted, “I wasn’t sure where I was headed. My game wasn’t at its best, and I was struggling to make an impact.” However, with the guidance of her caddie and coach Sean Burke, Huang dedicated herself to intensive practice sessions on the putting green following her early exit from the tournament.
The extra work paid off swiftly as Huang clinched consecutive victories on the Ladies European Tour within a month. Her triumph in the PIF London Championship on August 9 not only made headlines but also set a new record in the women’s golf realm. At the age of 17 years, 9 months, and 10 days, Huang became the youngest player to secure four LET titles, surpassing the previous record held by Lydia Ko of New Zealand.
Huang’s confidence received another boost when she outplayed world No. 6 Charley Hull at the PIF London Championship, held in Hull’s home country. Returning to the CPKC Women’s Open this year, Huang expressed a newfound sense of self-assurance, crediting her growth and experience on the tour over the past year.
As the $2.75-million US CPKC Women’s Open kicks off at Edmonton’s Royal Mayfair Golf Club, Huang stands as part of a rising cohort of young Canadian golf talents. Among them is Aphrodite Deng from Calgary, who, at the age of 15, impressed as the low amateur in last year’s event, setting high standards for amateur performance.
Deng’s achievements, including winning the U.S. Girls’ Junior Championship and securing notable finishes in prestigious tournaments, underscore the emerging prowess of Canadian golfers on the global stage. Huang, Deng, and other promising talents like Clairey Lin have garnered attention from golfing circles worldwide, prompting inquiries into the burgeoning success of Canadian golf.
