The Simon Fraser University Pipe Band has achieved a remarkable feat by clinching the Grade 1 global title at the World Pipe Band Championships in Glasgow, Scotland, marking their seventh championship victory in 17 years. Led by Pipe Major Alan Bevan, the band’s exceptional performance was commended by Glasgow Life, the organization hosting the competition on behalf of the Royal Scottish Pipe Band Association.
According to Bevan, winning this championship represents a significant milestone as it is the most prestigious accolade in the world of pipe bands. Notably, this win marks the first time since 2010 that a non-U.K. band has claimed the world championship title, as highlighted by Glasgow Life.
Participating alongside more than 200 bands from 14 countries like Australia, New Zealand, Oman, and Malaysia, the Simon Fraser University Pipe Band showcased their dedication and talent. Andrew Lee, a bagpiper in the band, expressed their elation at finally securing the championship after years of close calls, emphasizing the hard work and coordination that went into this achievement.
