A family from Squamish, British Columbia, is grateful to be safe after narrowly avoiding a construction incident in the 1800 block of Hamilton Street. Claire Johnstone and her young son narrowly escaped injury when a scaffold collapsed next to their car on August 11.
Johnstone described the terrifying moment when the scaffold crashed down beside her car as she was loading her son into the vehicle. She quickly reacted, urging her husband to drive away from the building to safety. Despite the chaos and panic in the car, including her mother and partner, they managed to park and assess the situation after escaping.
Nearby, two men were injured in what authorities termed a “workplace accident.” Emergency services responded to the scene, leading to the closure of that section of Hamilton Street for investigation.
Johnstone recounted the emotional turmoil of the incident, especially considering that they were on their way to the hospital to have their son checked out. Reviewing the Tesla footage later, she was shocked to see how close they came to being struck by debris. The gravity of the situation left her shaken, reflecting on how a split-second decision or a slight variation in circumstances could have had tragic consequences.
Despite the damage sustained by their car, Johnstone and her family felt fortunate to have avoided serious harm. The experience has left a lasting impact on her, with lingering feelings of unease and the realization of how fragile life can be.
