Finn Holland, a 15-year-old animal enthusiast from Maces Bay in southern New Brunswick, took quick action when he discovered a stranded shark near his home. With his family’s support, Finn rescued a porbeagle shark weighing around 70 kilograms that had washed ashore.
Despite initial concerns due to the shark’s size and condition, Finn bravely assisted the creature back into the ocean, where it swam away. His mother, Jill Holland, commended his spontaneous act of kindness, highlighting Finn’s innate compassion for animals.
The rare sighting of the porbeagle shark in shallow waters surprised shark expert Neil Hammerschlag. He explained that these sharks can regulate their body temperature, allowing them to thrive in colder Atlantic waters. However, the unusual presence of the shark near the shore suggested potential distress, possibly from illness or prior fishing interactions.
Hammerschlag emphasized the declining population of porbeagle sharks due to overfishing, underscoring the significance of Finn’s rescue effort. Despite the shark’s endangered status, the federal government has yet to provide official protection.
