Nicole Robichaud, a lawyer and caregiver residing in Ottawa, reflects on the enduring tradition of a folk art calendar in her family for nearly three decades. The calendar, a cherished Christmas gift, has been a constant presence, evoking fond memories for her and her mother.

In 2015, her mother was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease at the age of 68, having witnessed the progression of the disease in her grandfather years before. Despite the challenges and changes brought on by the illness, the calendar continued to hold significance in their lives.

Over the years, as her mother’s condition advanced, transitioning from the family home to a retirement facility and eventually to a smaller suite, the calendar remained a steadfast symbol of tradition. Even as her mother’s ability to engage with it waned, Nicole continued to order the calendar annually, finding solace in the routine it provided.

As her visits to her mother became more challenging, Nicole found purpose in sharing the calendar with her, flipping through the pages and reminiscing about the artwork. Though her mother’s responses faded over time, the act of giving the calendar retained its importance, serving as a connection to their shared past and a source of comfort amidst the difficulties of Alzheimer’s.

In the face of the debilitating effects of the disease, the calendar symbolizes more than just a gift; it embodies a spiritual belief for Nicole, offering a sense of continuity, love, and hope. Through this simple tradition, she finds a way to navigate the complexities of Alzheimer’s and infuse her mother’s environment with familiarity and care.

As she looks ahead to the upcoming year, Nicole anticipates the ritual of turning the page on the calendar, embracing the opportunity to create moments of connection and warmth in her mother’s world.
