Growing up in Delta, B.C., one of my cherished childhood memories revolves around family dinners on a small beige mat. As the sun set, its warm amber glow filled the room while we indulged in delicious Pakistani cuisine, often featuring a fragrant pot of biryani or creamy butter chicken with homemade naan. Seated in a circle, we shared stories and daily highlights, carrying on a tradition passed down by my father from his upbringing in Lahore to our suburban life in North Delta.

Despite the initial bond forged by these dinners, as my siblings and I grew busy with work, school, and sports, the tradition faded. It wasn’t until I turned 23 and hosted a Thanksgiving dinner that the nostalgia resurfaced. Inviting friends from diverse cultural backgrounds to partake in our tradition of dining on the ground, we gathered around the worn-out beige mat found in storage. The experience was heartwarming as we sat in a circle, enjoying Thanksgiving turkey and the simplicity of togetherness.

This moment not only blended my heritage with Canadian customs but also reignited the tradition for my family. Following the Thanksgiving dinner, we continued to gather around the mat, sharing food and stories, reinforcing the familial bonds that time and distance had strained. Prioritizing dinner time has since become a sacred ritual, reminding us of the power of togetherness and the importance of preserving traditions across generations.
