Norwegian runner Jakob Ingebrigtsen made an impressive return from injury by clinching his fourth consecutive 5,000-meter title at the European championships in Birmingham, England. The two-time Olympic champion had been sidelined for some time after undergoing surgery earlier this year to address scar tissue around his left Achilles tendon.

In a thrilling finish, Ingebrigtsen surged past Florian Bremm of Germany in the final stretch to secure victory with a time of 13 minutes and 15.29 seconds. Reflecting on his win, Ingebrigtsen expressed his disbelief at his triumphant comeback, stating, “Coming from the lowest of lows to be European champion again means the world to me.”

Ingebrigtsen’s competitors praised his remarkable performance, with France’s Etienne Daguinos hailing him as “a legend of our sport.” Despite initially feeling confident of victory, Bremm acknowledged Ingebrigtsen’s superior speed and determination post-injury.

Notably, Ingebrigtsen opted out of the 1,500-meter race in Birmingham, focusing solely on the 5,000 meters. His recent struggles with Achilles issues impacted his performance at the world championships in Tokyo last year.

In a separate event, British sprinter Amy Hunt clinched the women’s 100 meters title, narrowly beating her rivals with a time of 11 seconds. Dutch athlete Jessica Schilder secured her third consecutive shot put gold, showcasing her dominance in the field with a throw of 20.73 meters.

Schilder, a reigning world champion, expressed her satisfaction with the victory, noting the challenges she overcame, including an injury. Her consistent success in shot put events has solidified her status as a formidable competitor in the sport.

Italian athlete Leonardo Fabbri successfully defended his men’s shot put title, further affirming his prowess in the event. The European championships continue to witness remarkable performances from top athletes across various disciplines.
