Team GB has clinched its first gold at the Winter Olympics as Matt Weston triumphed in the men’s skeleton event. Weston, aged 28, emerged as a top contender for Team GB in Milano Cortina and took the lead after the initial two heats with impressive timings of 56.21 and 55.88. His total time stood at 1:52.09 by the end of the first day, followed by another strong performance of 55.63 in the third heat.
The highlight was Weston’s final run, setting a track record with a time of 55.61. Overwhelmed by his historic win, Weston shed tears of joy while celebrating with his teammate Marcus Wyatt and Team GB coaches. This victory marks a significant achievement for Weston, who finished 15th in the previous Winter Olympics. Meanwhile, Wyatt, though improving on the second day, secured the seventh position with a combined time of 3:45.77.
In a post-victory statement, Weston expressed deep gratitude, saying, “It means everything. It means a hell of a lot to me personally, I have worked so hard for this. Everyone back at home, my fiancee, my family, my friends, everyone that has sacrificed for me to be here. I have missed funerals, birthdays, everything for this moment and it feels amazing.”
Weston’s triumph propels Team GB onto the Winter Olympics medal table, with German athletes Axel Jungk and Christopher Grotheer securing silver and bronze medals, respectively. Lizzie Yarnold commented on Weston’s performance, highlighting his precise decision-making and intense focus. Team GB’s chef de mission, Eve Muirhead, praised Weston’s composure under pressure, lauding his exceptional performance and the support he received.
