Police have apprehended a suspected shooter following a tragic incident at Brown University in Rhode Island, USA, where two individuals lost their lives, and several others sustained injuries. Gunshots rang out in a classroom around 4 pm on Saturday, after which the perpetrator fled on foot, leading to a 10-hour manhunt. Law enforcement shared a brief video of a person of interest clad in all black walking near the university building, although it is uncertain if this individual is the one in custody.
A preliminary statement from the university confirmed the deaths of two victims and informed that eight others were hospitalized. The university expressed deep regret over the shooting at the Barus & Holley engineering building, stating, “Two deceased victims have been confirmed, and eight additional victims are in critical but stable condition at the hospital. A shelter-in-place order remains in effect, and the shooter(s) are still at large.”
Providence Mayor Brett Smiley disclosed that exams were ongoing in the building where the tragic incident occurred. The shooting took place during two exams being conducted at the Barus and Holley building, known for engineering and physics classes and labs situated on the eastern side of the campus.
A large-scale manhunt ensued, involving over 400 police and law enforcement officers patrolling the streets of Providence overnight. Multiple agencies at the local, state, and federal levels, including fire departments, the FBI, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, collaborated to ensure community safety.
Mayor Smiley provided an update on the injured, reporting that seven individuals are in stable condition, one remains critical, and one has been discharged from the hospital.
