Two primary schools in Manchester were placed in a state of heightened security earlier today.
Police responded to an incident on Wood Street at approximately 12:10 pm after receiving reports of a man causing disturbances and issuing threats in the area.
A representative from Greater Manchester Police stated: “At around 12:10 pm today (November 13), law enforcement officers were alerted to a man creating disturbances and issuing threats on Wood Street, Middleton. Police officers intervened, and a man in his forties was apprehended on suspicion of breaching public order. Investigations are ongoing.”
Bowlee Park Community School and St Mary’s RC Primary School communicated to parents and caregivers that they had implemented security measures as a precautionary step, as reported by the Manchester Evening News.
A statement from Bowlee Park mentioned: “We have been made aware of an incident in the vicinity. While our school is not directly impacted, we are taking necessary precautions to ensure everyone’s safety. For safety reasons, students will remain indoors for the remainder of the school day. Classes and scheduled activities will proceed as usual.
“There is no need for parents or caregivers to come to the school. This action is solely to guarantee the continuous safety and well-being of our students. Children will be dismissed at the regular times and locations. We appreciate your understanding and support.”
A message from St Mary’s stated: “There was a brief lockdown incident at the school today due to an individual shouting in the direction of the school. The police were contacted and responded promptly.”
This development follows Bowlee Park’s evacuation in June following several harassing phone calls to the school, including threats of a bomb attack.
The school premises were evacuated at about 3:30 pm, and parents were instructed to pick up their children at the usual dismissal time. The incident was later deemed a hoax, and the school resumed normal operations the next day.
Earlier, both Bowlee Park and St Mary’s were briefly placed under lockdown after reports of an individual carrying a knife near Bowlee Park.
