Millions of drivers stand to benefit from a new government initiative aimed at reducing fuel costs. The initiative mandates that all of the approximately 8,350 fuel stations in the country must promptly notify consumers of any changes in petrol and diesel prices. This information will be shared with third-party websites and mobile apps, enabling drivers to easily compare fuel prices nationwide.
The objective is to eventually provide real-time updates on fuel prices, offering drivers increased opportunities to save money, potentially amounting to substantial savings over time. Previously, only 65% of UK fuel stations were covered by an interim scheme overseen by the Competition and Markets Authority.
The government’s ‘Fuel Finder’ program, now in effect, will encompass all petrol stations and enforce strict guidelines regarding price information disclosure. Non-compliant operators could face penalties such as receiving a “compliance notice” or being fined up to 1% of their global annual revenue.
The initiative was launched in response to concerns that motorists have been paying inflated prices for fuel. Even a small price difference of 5p per liter between stations could save the average driver £2.75 per tank refill.
Edmund King, president of the motoring group AA, emphasized the importance of empowering drivers with information to make informed choices. He highlighted that the initiative could lead to a shift in how UK drivers perceive fuel prices, similar to practices in other European countries.
Simon Williams, head of policy at RAC, expressed optimism that the initiative would foster competition among retailers, ultimately benefiting drivers with better value at the pumps. As more fuel stations participate in daily price submissions, drivers will have easier access to the cheapest fuel options through their preferred apps or navigation systems.
Currently, the national average price for unleaded petrol is 132.1p per liter, while diesel stands at 141.2p per liter.
