The latest progressive movement, dubbed “Your Party,” has decided not to have Jeremy Corbyn or Zarah Sultana at its helm following a significant vote among members.

Instead of opting for established figures like Corbyn or Sultana, the party’s inaugural conference has chosen a structure led by regular members rather than Members of Parliament (MPs). The decision, which favored a collective leadership approach over a traditional single leader model by a margin of 51.6% to 48.4%, averted a potential clash between Sultana and Corbyn, who both have ties to the Labour Party.

Sultana, who abstained from the conference’s initial day due to a dispute over expulsions, expressed enthusiasm for the outcome. She remarked, “I have advocated for maximum member involvement from the beginning. It is truly thrilling to witness members opt for collective leadership. Together, we are establishing a fresh socialist party that is profoundly democratic and driven by a broad movement. This party will be guided by its members, not MPs. This marks just the start.”

The former Labour member is anticipated to conclude her boycott of the conference soon after her initial protest against the party’s expulsion actions and what she referred to as a “witch hunt” against certain members.

A representative from Your Party stated, “This vote affirms our commitment to a new approach in politics: one that originates from the grassroots rather than top-down. In the corridors of power, there exists an entrenched political elite increasingly out of touch with everyday citizens, prioritizing corporations and billionaires over the communities they are meant to serve. With a genuinely member-driven party, we aim to offer a different paradigm: democratic, grassroots-oriented, and accountable.”

Alongside other agenda items, attendees at the debut conference are also voting on a formal name for the party, with options such as “Our Party,” “Popular Alliance,” and “For the Many,” in addition to the current placeholder name “Your Party.” The final decision on the party’s name will be announced later in the day.
