Nearly 66% of adults have expressed that the cost of living crisis has intensified for them in the last month, according to concerning official statistics. The Office for National Statistics data highlights that energy and food costs continue to heavily impact people’s finances.

A small fraction of adults, about 3%, revealed that they or their households faced food shortages in the past two weeks due to financial constraints. This percentage significantly increased to 8% among individuals residing in the most deprived regions of England, as well as among renters and individuals with disabilities.

Additionally, nearly 60% of respondents mentioned they are economizing by reducing dining out, indicating the immense strain on restaurants and pubs struggling to stay afloat.

The Labour party has pledged to prioritize addressing the ongoing cost of living crisis, recognizing its significance to voters, particularly in the upcoming local elections. A recent survey by the ONS underscores that the cost of living remains the top concern for the majority of people, surpassing other critical issues like healthcare, the economy, immigration, crime, and housing.

The ONS noted that the proportion of adults expressing concerns about the cost of living has remained consistent compared to the previous year. The survey period, covering the early weeks of December, encompassed the challenging financial period around Christmas, intensifying household financial pressures.

Among the notable findings, 62% of respondents reported an increase in their cost of living from the previous month, with the figure rising to 70% among disabled adults. Rising costs were primarily attributed to higher expenditures on food shopping, energy bills, and fuel.

Furthermore, a significant portion of respondents indicated adopting cost-saving measures such as purchasing cheaper food, seeking discounts, and eating out less. Concerns about energy bills were prevalent, with around one-third finding it challenging to afford them, while some struggled to maintain adequate warmth in their homes.

Analysis of data over the past quarter revealed that women exhibit higher levels of concern about the cost of living compared to men. Worries about financial strains were prominently observed among the unemployed, retired individuals, and self-employed individuals alike.
