A tragic incident occurred in 2008 at a Walmart in Green Acres Mall, Valley Stream, New York, during the Black Friday sales rush. Jdimytai Damour, a 34-year-old former customer service representative turned temporary supermarket employee, lost his life when a large crowd of over 2,000 shoppers stampeded into the store at 5 am, trampling him in the chaos.

Damour, a Freeport High School graduate with aspirations of becoming a teacher, was described by his father as a “good boy” with a passion for reading and poetry. The overwhelmed crowd not only caused Damour’s death but also injured other employees and shoppers, including a pregnant woman.

Despite being rushed to the hospital, Damour succumbed to asphyxiation from the pressure on his chest caused by the shoppers. Investigations revealed that Walmart lacked adequate security measures to handle the massive influx of customers on Black Friday. The United Food and Commercial Workers Union Local 1500 called for a federal investigation into Damour’s death, labeling the incident as avoidable and a result of negligence on the part of the store management.

Walmart issued a press release expressing regret over the tragedy, stating that despite their efforts to increase security and collaborate with the police, they could not prevent the unfortunate event. The incident sparked outrage and raised questions about the safety measures in place during such high-traffic sales events.
