A recent report from consumer group Which? reveals that the major mobile networks, including EE, Vodafone, Three, and O2, are falling short in overall performance compared to their smaller competitors. The report, based on a survey of over 5,000 smartphone users nationwide, indicates that lesser-known networks often offer better value and superior customer service.
The survey aimed to assess which providers are meeting customer expectations and which are not. It showed that the established “Big Four” networks are trailing behind many smaller rivals in terms of customer satisfaction and performance.
Among the top-ranked providers were Talkmobile, Tesco Mobile, Giffgaff, and SMARTY, with EE ranking highest among the major providers at ninth place. Price emerged as a significant factor, with customers on the Big Four networks paying an average of £16 per month for a SIM-only deal, while users on smaller networks paid just £9 on average.
Despite the lower prices offered by smaller providers, coverage quality remains on par as many of them utilize major networks’ infrastructure. This allows customers to access the same signal and service quality without the premium prices associated with well-known brands. Switching between networks is also easier than perceived, with some customers able to switch in as little as 10 minutes.
One member of Which? shared their experience of leaving O2 for a cheaper SMARTY plan, saving around £200 annually. Natalie Hitchins, Which?’s Head of Home Products and Services, emphasized that smaller providers consistently outperform larger firms in customer service and affordability.
Hitchins encouraged customers unhappy with their current service or looking to save money to consider switching to a provider offering better value. The rankings by Which? showed Talkmobile leading with a score of 83%, followed by Tesco Mobile at 81%, Giffgaff and SMARTY at 79%, and others with varying scores, including EE at 74%, iD Mobile at 73%, and O2 and Three at the lower end with scores of 67% and 65% respectively.
