Isis has employed artificial intelligence for the first time in an attempt to enlist new British jihadists, causing concern among intelligence agencies in the UK. Both MI5 and MI6 are closely monitoring the utilization of AI as a propaganda tool amidst rising apprehensions of a resurgence of Islamic State and al-Qaeda in the Middle East and Eastern Africa.

Reportedly, ISIS operatives have leveraged technology and popular social media platforms to promote their activities globally. They have been rapidly translating Arabic materials, such as editorials from the group’s weekly newspaper, into multiple languages for dissemination on platforms like Facebook before being detected and removed.

In a recent threat update, Sir Ken McCallum, the director-general of MI5, highlighted that overseas groups are persistently trying to incite terrorism in the UK and Europe. He pointed out that Al-Qaeda and Islamic State are regaining strength, exploiting instability abroad to expand their influence and inspire potential attackers in the West.

Aside from using technology to instigate and coordinate terror plots in Europe, IS is reportedly initiating a fresh recruitment campaign to attract foreign fighters to join their ranks in Syria. This recruitment drive, utilizing advanced technology and social media platforms for outreach, has raised concerns about the potential recruitment of a new wave of British recruits.

Recently, an 18-year-old from south London faced terror charges after being apprehended at Gatwick Airport while attempting to travel to Istanbul, with intentions to cross into Syria to join IS fighters. He is accused of planning to commit terrorist acts and is scheduled to appear in court at the Old Bailey later this month.
