Local government officials who repeatedly violate regulations or engage in serious misconduct will now face stricter penalties under new government proposals released today.
The government aims to eliminate the disruptive behavior of “bad actors” within town councils by implementing measures such as suspensions, according to ministers.
As per the new plans, council members found guilty of serious misconduct could be suspended for up to six months. Additionally, they may have their allowances withheld to prevent taxpayers’ funds from supporting individuals breaching the code of conduct. Councilors receive a basic allowance to assist them in their responsibilities, with amounts typically around £16,000 per year, set by County Councils.
A mandatory code of conduct will be established by the government, applicable to all local authority types and tiers in England, ensuring uniform high standards for everyone.
Steve Reed, the Secretary of Housing, Communities, and Local Government, emphasized the necessity to cleanse local politics by removing those tarnishing the system’s reputation. These reforms empower councils and mayoral authorities to address such issues effectively.
Minister Alison McGovern acknowledged the dedication of the majority of councillors as diligent public servants striving for their communities’ betterment. She expressed confidence that these reforms will elevate standards and facilitate prompt and equitable actions where required.
The government’s decision follows a consultation within the local government sector. It plans to enact legislation to enforce these measures, including the establishment of standards committees, interim suspension capabilities, support for complainants, and a national appeals mechanism by principal authorities.
