If you own a PC running Windows, it’s important to verify the operating system version. Microsoft is set to end free support for Windows 10 in just 7 days, after which devices running this OS may face increased vulnerability to bugs and cyber threats.
Microsoft has been advising users to upgrade to Windows 11 or consider Extended Security Updates to protect Windows 10 PCs for the next three years.
Research from Which? indicates that an estimated 21 million individuals in the UK still use Windows 10 on their computers, posing a significant target for cybercriminals seeking to exploit security gaps.
Alarmingly, Which? found that 26% of Windows 10 users plan to continue using the outdated system even after official updates cease. Once free support ends, Microsoft will no longer issue security updates or crucial patches, leaving devices at a higher risk of security breaches.
Which? emphasizes that unsupported software is often targeted by hackers to steal data, urging users to take action promptly to safeguard their devices.
Lisa Barber, Editor of Which? Tech, highlighted the importance of checking the Windows version and making a plan to avoid potential vulnerabilities. Upgrading to Windows 11 for free if compatible is recommended, while users ineligible for the upgrade can opt for a one-year extension through Microsoft’s Extended Security Updates program.
It’s crucial to note that users must actively enroll in the extension program and can do so for free by backing up their Windows settings to OneDrive or using Microsoft loyalty points or a one-time payment.
For those considering a new device, planning how to dispose of the old one is also advised.
