An urgent alert has been issued to Windows 10 users as Microsoft is set to end support for the operating system in 2025. With the deadline fast approaching, Microsoft has emphasized the need for immediate action.
According to Microsoft’s website update, Windows 10 will reach the end of servicing on October 14, 2025. The October 2025 security update will be the final one available, after which devices running Windows 10 will no longer receive monthly security updates to protect against new threats.
For users still loyal to Windows 10, the recommendation is to upgrade to Windows 11 promptly or opt for Microsoft’s Extended Security Updates to ensure continued smooth operation for the next three years. Failure to take action could expose laptops and desktops to cyber threats and software issues, as Windows 10 will not receive any further feature updates unlike Windows 11.
To meet the Windows 10 deadline, users have two main options:
**1. Upgrade to Windows 11:** Users with compatible PCs can easily upgrade to Windows 11 following simple instructions provided by Microsoft. New laptops also come with Windows 11 pre-installed, although purchasing a new device may come at a significant cost.
**2. Stick with Windows 10:** Users opting to stay with Windows 10 are advised to consider enrolling in Microsoft’s Extended Updates program (ESUs). While ESUs do not introduce new features, they ensure protection against known security threats or bugs. Microsoft offers ESUs at an annual fee of $30 (£24), providing access to critical and important security updates for Windows 10.
Yusuf Mehdi, Executive Vice President and Consumer Chief Marketing Officer at Windows, highlighted the opportunity for consumers to secure existing PCs through the ESU program ahead of Windows 10’s end of support in 2025. Mehdi mentioned the ESU program being introduced for personal use, offering a one-year option for $30 with enrollment opening closer to the end of support.
It is crucial to take action before the October 14 deadline to safeguard your Windows 10 device. Continuing to use Windows 10 post-support end may expose devices to security risks, making it an unadvisable choice.
