Virgin Media is set to upgrade some broadband customers’ home routers, offering a boost in performance at no extra charge. The company announced that users still using older Hub 3 and Hub 4 devices will have the opportunity to switch to the more advanced Hub 5, which features upgraded Wi-Fi 6 technology for faster and more reliable connections.
Eligible customers will be contacted via email over the next few weeks and months as the upgrade is gradually implemented throughout 2026. The Hub 5 comes equipped with Wi-Fi 6 technology and seven internal antennas to ensure stronger and more consistent coverage within homes. Virgin Media plans to upgrade thousands of customers currently using older routers during this year.
Customers do not need to take any action until they receive direct communication from Virgin Media regarding their eligibility for the upgrade. They can also verify their router model by checking the sticker on the device or by accessing their account through the Virgin Media Connect app.
Upgrading to the Hub 5 router can significantly enhance the broadband experience, offering wider Wi-Fi coverage, improved stability, and compatibility with future updates. It is optimized for faster Gig1 speeds, enabling quicker downloads and streaming. Gig1 speeds allow users to download a full HD movie in less than 40 seconds, which is more than 10 times faster than the UK average.
Wi-Fi 6 is the latest wireless networking technology known for its faster speeds, enhanced efficiency, and improved performance in busy environments. It can support multiple connected devices simultaneously, provide better performance across different frequency bands, and is energy-efficient, making it ideal for modern smart homes with high data demands. While Wi-Fi 7 is also available, Wi-Fi 6 is well-suited for the average user’s needs.
