Now is a great time to assess your broadband connection and consider making some easy adjustments. BT’s Openreach network has recently announced that millions of households now have the option to upgrade to faster full-fibre internet, but a significant number have not yet made the transition to this advanced technology.

Recent data reveals that approximately 20 million homes and businesses now have access to Fibre to the Premises (FTTP) technology, enabling internet speeds exceeding 700Mbps, which is ten times faster than traditional copper wire connections.

Despite the availability of this service in many neighborhoods, a large portion of users have not taken advantage of the upgrade. Openreach reports that only about 38% of eligible households have switched to full fibre, leaving millions still reliant on slower and less dependable connections. For instance, a 500Mbps connection allows for downloading a full HD movie in under two minutes, significantly quicker than the nearly 10 minutes required with standard copper wires.

Clive Selley, Chief Executive of Openreach, emphasized the importance of reliable digital connectivity, stating, “In 2025, being online isn’t a luxury – it’s a lifeline. From booking GP appointments to applying for jobs, accessing education, and launching businesses, digital connectivity is the gateway to opportunity.” Selley highlighted that full fibre internet enhances speed and reliability, meeting the evolving demands of the digital realm, but individuals must proactively contact their broadband provider to make the switch.

If uncertain about eligibility for full fibre, it is advisable to check your postcode promptly to explore potential upgrades. Additionally, while some may expect higher costs for improved services, Full Fibre prices have actually decreased in recent years, with options available for under £30 per month, potentially costing less than slower copper connections.

Here are some broadband pricing options via Openreach cables:
– Sky 300Mbps – £29 per month
– EE 150Mbps – £28.99 per month
– BT 300Mbps – £32.99 per month

Although Openreach is a prominent broadband provider, numerous other options exist in the market, including alternative network providers like Community Fibre, Hyperoptic, Virgin Media, and CityFibre, making it worthwhile to explore different providers for the best fit.
