Berlin’s famous techno clubs have long been a mystery when it comes to entry criteria. However, a recent study conducted by the University of Bath, King’s College London, and Freie Universität Berlin aimed to uncover the selection process at these exclusive venues. Published in the Journal of Marketing, the research revealed that door selectors seek individuals who both ‘fit in’ and ‘stand out’ to enhance the club experience.

Dr. Liam Cagney, a Berlin-based writer and musicologist, provided additional insights into the club scene, describing it as a blend of public and private space. He likened door selectors to hosts inviting guests into their home, emphasizing the significance of Berlin’s club culture in reshaping social interactions. Cagney acknowledged the commercial aspect of clubs leveraging the allure of exclusivity but noted the intentional mystique surrounding entry requirements that adds to the appeal.

The rise of ‘techno tourists’ flocking to Berlin, influenced by platforms like TikTok, has led to an influx of visitors attempting to navigate the strict entry policies of renowned clubs like Berghain and Tresor. Cagney expressed concerns about newcomers adopting a consumerist approach that could disrupt the experience for regular patrons, likening their presence to that of spectators at a zoo.

Acknowledging the role of bouncers in maintaining the club’s atmosphere, Cagney recounted instances of creative door policies, including rejecting individuals based on attire or experimenting with entry criteria as a form of amusement. While facing rejection at the doors can be disheartening, Cagney suggested that understanding and embracing the unpredictable nature of Berlin’s techno clubs could lead to a more fulfilling experience for those willing to become insiders.

Looking ahead, Cagney is set to release his novel, “Berghain Nights,” in October 2025, offering an in-depth exploration of Berlin’s club scene through essays, memoirs, and interviews with key figures in the electronic dance music industry and Berlin’s nightlife community.
