Britons are bracing for a wave of frigid conditions as temperatures are expected to drop to as low as -7C, accompanied by heavy snowfall due to disruptions in the Polar Vortex.

Recent weather patterns in the UK have been turbulent, with widespread rainfall across many regions and a continuation of mild temperatures through the week. However, a shift is anticipated towards the weekend and the latter part of November, with significantly colder weather on the horizon as high-pressure systems dominate, ushering in icy winds from the Arctic.

The alterations in the weather can be attributed to substantial disturbances in the Polar Vortex resulting from an unusually premature Sudden Stratospheric Warming Event.

The Polar Vortex, a mass of frigid air encircling the Earth’s poles, weakens, allowing cold Arctic air to move southward, triggered by sudden stratospheric warming events causing changes in wind direction or velocity. These occurrences are notorious for instigating heavy snowfall, severe blizzards, and a rapid drop in temperatures.

According to maps by WXCharts, a wintry spell is forecasted for this month, with temperatures hovering around or dipping below zero at the beginning of the following week, plummeting to -7C in Scotland, -3C in northern England, and -2C in the southern regions.

The collision of cold air with moisture from the Atlantic Ocean sets the stage for snow to blanket the UK.

The Met Office predicts a cooler atmosphere settling over much of the UK by the weekend, bringing frosty conditions in some areas and a predominantly drier and brighter weather pattern. Exceptions are expected in the southern and southwestern regions, where cloud cover and milder temperatures may persist temporarily before clearing.

Looking ahead to the period from November 16-25, the national agency anticipates continued cold weather, particularly in central and northern parts of the UK, with possibilities of frosty nights and wintry showers along coastal regions, especially in higher terrains in the north. The southern regions may experience cloudier and wetter conditions initially, with uncertainties regarding the duration of these conditions. However, a shift towards drier and colder weather across most of the UK is projected for the beginning of the following week, with potential fluctuations later in the period.
