A concerned British mother, Lucica Antohi, was dismissed for having “new mum anxiety” when she sought medical help for her baby, Matias, who appeared to have a swollen belly after birth in January 2024. Despite being reassured by doctors, during a vacation in Spain in June of that year, Matias began experiencing feeding difficulties and dry nappies.

Lucica took Matias to University Hospital in Alicante, where tests revealed a 21.5-centimeter tumor on his right kidney. While most of the mass was successfully removed on July 4, it regrew within a month. Due to long waiting times in the UK, Lucica temporarily relocated to Spain with Matias for treatment at La Fe Valencia hospital, where he underwent multiple surgeries, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and immunotherapy.

Facing a bleak prognosis from both Spanish hospitals and the NHS, Lucica turned to fundraising for £20k to seek alternative treatment with Osimetrinib at St Jude Hospital in the US. Describing the harrowing experience, Lucica expressed hope that their story would reach a specialist who could offer assistance.

Matias’ health struggles began early on, with Lucica noticing his swollen belly shortly after his birth in January 2023. Despite multiple visits to doctors due to his symptoms, including a persistent cough and sniffles, she was repeatedly told that her concerns were unfounded. However, during their holiday in Alicante in June 2024, Matias was diagnosed with a rapidly growing tumor in his right kidney, requiring urgent medical intervention.

The family’s ordeal continued as the tumor recurred despite surgeries and various treatments, leading to the consideration of Osimetrinib as a potential solution. Lucica emphasized the urgency of receiving this treatment to save her son and pleaded for support in their journey.
