On VJ Day, the conclusion of a significant conflict that reshaped the global landscape, we pay tribute to the veterans who served in the Far East. Prior to becoming the Labour MP for Dover and Deal, I dedicated over 5 years to the UK Armed Forces, undertaking three operational missions, including deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan. The enduring spirit of those who fought in World War II lives on in today’s military personnel, demonstrating unwavering commitment.

Having witnessed the profound toll of war – the loss of lives, displacement of families, and fractured communities – it is imperative to commemorate and respect the contributions of our VJ Day veterans, listening to their narratives to ensure that history’s lessons are not forgotten and their sacrifices are duly acknowledged.

In an increasingly tumultuous global environment, it is crucial that our dedication to peace and security aligns with robust support for those safeguarding it. Since assuming office a year ago, the Labour government has been resolute in revitalizing the nation’s bond with its armed forces, enshrining the Armed Forces Covenant into law and appointing an Armed Forces Commissioner.

While there remains more work to be done, we take pride in the strides we have taken thus far. Efforts are underway to reclaim 36,000 military residences into public ownership and allocate over £7 billion throughout this parliamentary term to upgrade neglected housing facilities.

Our new VALOUR system facilitates veterans’ access to essential services, streamlining assistance in housing, employment, and healthcare. Notably, the UK Armed Forces received their most substantial pay increase in over two decades last year, emphasizing the imperative to sustain our support for them in the years ahead.

In a historic pledge made at the NATO Summit in June, the Prime Minister committed to elevating national security expenditure to 5% of GDP by 2035. As we observe this momentous occasion, let us pay tribute to our VJ Day heroes, commemorate those who made the ultimate sacrifice, and acknowledge the unwavering dedication of our servicemen and women in upholding their legacy.
