The UK’s defence chief has issued a stark warning about increasing threats to the country, following incidents where lasers were directed at RAF pilots from a Russian spy ship. Defence Secretary John Healey emphasized the growing aggression from Vladimir Putin’s regime, urging the public to acknowledge a heightened level of danger. He disclosed that both the Navy and Air Force had been mobilized to confront the Kremlin’s spy vessel, the Yantar, which recently intruded into UK waters.

He condemned the use of lasers against British aircraft as extremely hazardous and sent a clear message to the Russian leadership, stating, “We see you.” He stated that the military would take action if the spy ship altered its course, signaling a significant escalation in tensions between the UK and Moscow. The Yantar, known for surveillance during peacetime and potential sabotage in conflict, was positioned near Scottish waters as confirmed by a Ministry of Defence source.

Highlighting the need to adapt to this evolving threat landscape, Healey emphasized the government’s commitment to a substantial increase in defence spending. The recent incursion of the Yantar serves as a reminder of the escalating Russian threat, with previous encounters indicating the ship’s intentions. He underscored the readiness of the UK military to respond to any provocative actions by the Yantar.

Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper pointed out Russia’s escalating actions following setbacks in Ukraine, emphasizing the need for vigilance and a resolute response. Recent events, including an explosion near Ukraine’s border and an attack on a crucial railway line in Poland, have heightened concerns about Russian activities in the region. The UK government remains vigilant, with ongoing monitoring of the Yantar’s movements and preparedness to address any potential threats.

The Defence Secretary reaffirmed Labour’s dedication to bolstering national defense, contrasting it with perceived weaknesses in other political factions. He positioned Labour as the party committed to safeguarding the UK’s security interests in the face of growing geopolitical challenges.
