In a recent analysis, major broadband providers in the UK are falling behind in delivering reliable services to customers, as per a report by consumer advocate Which?. The report highlights that smaller alternative networks, known as “alt-nets,” are surpassing big brands by offering quicker speeds, more dependable connections, and better value for money.
The study revealed that internet connection issues, particularly frequent dropouts, are a common concern among consumers. Slow download speeds and service interruptions also ranked high among customer complaints.
A significant 91% of broadband users reported facing issues with their service in the past year, indicating a lack of trouble-free connections for the majority of households.
Among the prominent providers, Sky faced criticism for frequent dropouts, with 38% of customers experiencing the problem. Virgin Media also struggled, with 30% of users encountering regular connection issues despite paying premium prices for broadband, with around 25% also dissatisfied with download speeds.
Notably, Sky users expressed dissatisfaction with broadband speeds, with nearly a third stating their service was not up to par. Other underperforming providers include TalkTalk and Sky’s NOW service, which received poor feedback from customers.
On the contrary, smaller UK providers have been leading the way, with Zen Internet demonstrating exceptional reliability compared to major brands. Community Fibre and Hyperoptic also received praise for their services.
Among larger providers, Plusnet stood out for outperforming competitors like Vodafone, EE, BT, and Sky. This aligns with previous Which? research, consistently showing that smaller broadband firms excel in reliability, customer service, and value for money compared to major providers.
Which? encourages households to explore alternative providers in their area and consider switching if dissatisfied with their current service. Utilizing Ofcom’s broadband checker can help users identify available broadband networks easily.
In response to the report, a spokesperson from Virgin Media emphasized ongoing investments to enhance customer services, highlighting positive feedback from official sources regarding the company’s broadband performance.
Quality broadband is deemed essential, not a luxury, and with competitive deals in the market, consumers are empowered to switch providers for better service.
