Following a “mass shooting incident” that left three individuals injured in Fort Smith early Saturday, N.W.T. RCMP have lifted a shelter-in-place order and arrested two individuals. The police believe this was a targeted attack but are still investigating the connection of the two arrested individuals to the incident.
The incident, which occurred outside a local business in the community of just over 2,000 residents, prompted the community to take shelter before authorities were alerted. Witnesses reported the shooting taking place outside Dirty O’Fergies bar during the closing event of the Fireweed Festival, a local music festival.
The injured individuals are currently receiving medical treatment, with their identities yet to be disclosed by the police. Law enforcement agencies, including emergency response teams from N.W.T. and the Yukon, are assisting the RCMP in the ongoing investigation. The suspect, described as a male with distinct physical features, is still at large, believed to be armed, and the public is advised to report any sightings to the RCMP.
Despite the unsettling incident, Fort Smith Mayor Dana Fergusson has encouraged the community to stay calm and united, emphasizing that this incident does not define the community. The Fireweed Festival organizers have confirmed that the event will proceed as planned following the lifting of the shelter-in-place order and reassurances from law enforcement that there is no ongoing risk related to the festival.
The festival organizers expressed understanding for those who may feel apprehensive about attending but highlighted the importance of resilience and standing together in the face of adversity. The community is determined to move forward positively, symbolized by the fireweed flower, known for its resilience and strength in the aftermath of challenges.
