Two months after moving into their ideal residence, Justin and Amber Hicks were enjoying a cozy evening on the couch with their two-year-old son, Jacob. Tragically, their peaceful night took a horrifying turn when an intruder entered their home and fatally attacked the couple. Despite the brutal incident, little Jacob, miraculously unharmed, wandered amidst the aftermath, waiting for his parents to awaken.

The court learned that the Hicks were relaxing in front of the TV, unaware of the danger lurking outside. This would be their final moment together before being senselessly murdered, leaving their young son behind. The accused perpetrator of this heinous crime is Matthew Scott Lanz, the family’s neighbor.

Prosecutors revealed that the family’s nightmare unfolded around 10 p.m. when the intruder broke in through a back window, catching the Hicks off guard and defenseless. After the tragic event, Jacob was found trying to interact with his deceased parents, showcasing his innocence and confusion in the face of the tragedy.

Lanz is currently facing charges related to the 2021 murders in Cherokee County, Georgia, including cruelty to children for the emotional and physical distress caused to Jacob during the 12-hour ordeal. Fortunately, the child was unharmed when authorities discovered him.

The victims’ acquaintances expressed their joy about finding their dream home, with Justin being a respected firefighter in Cherokee County. In a separate incident shortly after the murders, Lanz was apprehended following a break-in at another property, resulting in a violent confrontation with law enforcement.

The trial has faced delays due to concerns over Lanz’s mental state, with conflicting assessments of his competency to stand trial. Despite claims of being set up by government agencies, Lanz is currently on trial for the tragic murders, with the legal proceedings ongoing.
