At least three individuals have lost their lives and numerous others have been injured after being dragged into turbulent waters in Tenerife, a popular holiday destination. The victims, who were caught in the incident at Puerto de la Cruz, sustained injuries primarily from impacts with rocks or the pier. The distressing event unfolded around 3 pm on November 8, with the confirmation of the initial fatality by emergency services later that same evening.

According to a report from the Canary Islands Emergency Services, one of the affected women experienced cardiac and respiratory failure at the time of rescue efforts. Responding to the scene were a medical ambulance, a sanitized ambulance, and three basic life support units, alongside local police, national police, and Maritime Rescue teams collaborating to assist the victims and secure the area.

The official emergency services report indicated that “a woman lost her life and nine others were injured after being swept into the water by a strong sea current at the Puerto de la Cruz Pier in Tenerife at 3 pm.” Authorities issued a caution regarding rough seas, advising individuals to avoid positioning themselves at the ends of piers or breakwaters and to refrain from risking photography or videography near wave impact zones.

Fernando Clavijo, the president of the Canary Islands, reiterated the safety warning on social media, emphasizing the need for continued vigilance: “We must remain alert as we are currently on pre-alert status due to coastal phenomena.”
