Shoe repair chain Timpson has introduced a new service for trading in mobile phones. Partnering with gadget resell company musicMagpie and AO, Timpson now allows customers to bring their unwanted smartphones to any of its stores for immediate cash payment. Recent research indicates that a significant number of UK adults possess unused smartphones at home, collectively valued at around £10 billion. While online reselling options are abundant, Timpson aims to cater to individuals who prefer in-person transactions, although similar high street alternatives already exist.
A survey revealed that a majority of people prefer trading in their devices face-to-face, with a quarter emphasizing the importance of instant payment. Timpson and musicMagpie initiated a trial run of the trade-in service four months ago, expanding it to over 1,300 Timpson outlets nationwide.
John Roberts, CEO of AO World, emphasized the convenience of the new service, stating that customers can swiftly receive cash for their old smartphones at any of the 1,300 Timpson locations. This initiative stems from AO’s acquisition of musicMagpie in 2024, showing promising potential for the partnership.
Steve Oliver, co-founder of musicMagpie, highlighted the significance of integrating Magpie services into Timpson’s extensive network, enhancing customer accessibility and convenience. Meanwhile, Timpson’s group director, Sid Hubbard, underscored the company’s commitment to providing expert and friendly service, now extending to smartphone trade-ins in collaboration with musicMagpie.
The partnership between Timpson and musicMagpie aims to help customers unlock the value in their old devices instantly while promoting sustainability and affordability.
