The mother of a teenage boy who tragically took his own life just 10 months after engaging with an AI chatbot has shared heart-wrenching details about the night of his death.
The 14-year-old, named Sewell, spent extensive time interacting with an AI bot posing as Daenerys Targaryen, a character from Game of Thrones, through the Character.ai app. His mother, Megan Garcia, believes that these interactions, some of which were explicit, played a role in driving her son to suicide.
In a heart-wrenching interview, Megan recounted the distressing moments leading up to Sewell’s death on February 28, 2024. Megan, a lawyer residing in Florida, recounted returning home from work to find Sewell missing from his room. Upon hearing the shower running in the bathroom, she checked on her other children in the living room.
Narrating the events that followed, Megan detailed discovering Sewell on the bathroom floor with injuries, initially mistaking it for an accidental fall. It was only later, as paramedics arrived, that the grim reality of Sewell’s suicide attempt became apparent to her.
Describing the heartbreaking moments that ensued, Megan recounted holding her son, praying fervently, and attempting CPR until paramedics took over. Despite efforts to save him, Sewell was pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital.
As Sewell’s tragic death unfolded, the family uncovered numerous messages exchanged between Sewell and the AI chatbot impersonating Daenerys. The messages revealed Sewell’s isolation and his final exchange with the bot before the tragic incident occurred.
In a subsequent statement, Megan accused Character.ai, the app hosting the chatbot, of exploiting her son and driving him to take his own life. Character.ai responded with condolences and emphasized their commitment to enhancing user safety through new features.
Character.ai announced a ban on users under 18 from chatting with its characters following the incident. Megan, preparing for legal action, expressed frustration at the belated decision, lamenting the irreversible loss of her son and the enduring impact on her life.
