A survivor of a deadly storm that claimed the life of Victoria Bond has shared the harrowing experience of facing the treacherous blizzard in Patagonia, Chile. Victoria, a 40-year-old PR professional who had worked with celebrities like Cheryl Tweedy and Annabelle Wallis, was part of a group trekking through the Torres del Paine nature reserve when disaster struck.
The group was caught in a powerful 120mph snowstorm, akin to a Category 3 hurricane, leading to the disappearance of nine tourists initially. Unfortunately, five members, including two Mexicans, two Germans, and Victoria, did not survive the ordeal.
Chris Aldridge, a companion of Victoria during the tragedy, recounted the terrifying moments as they struggled against the fierce winds and icy conditions. Despite expecting challenging weather conditions, they were unprepared for the severity of the storm during their descent from the peaks.
Upon returning to their camp, they discovered injuries among group members, with many suffering from hypothermia and frostbite. Realizing some were missing, the group, without park rangers who were absent due to election duties, ventured out to search for the lost individuals. Tragically, they were too late to save Victoria.
CONAF, the organization overseeing Chile’s national parks, expressed deep regret over the incident and pledged to enhance safety measures in the park to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
Victoria’s former workplace, Visit Isles of Scilly, mourned her loss, highlighting her vibrant personality and positive impact on those around her. Her friends and colleagues remembered her charisma, passion for life, and unwavering spirit.
