Australia’s interim captain, Steve Smith, has finally spoken out following a tense confrontation with England’s fast bowler, Jofra Archer, during the closing session at the Gabba. The visitors needed to dismiss the Aussies for under 64 runs, but Smith led his team to victory by clinching the win for the second Test in a row.

Smith entered the crease with Australia at 41-2 and swiftly guided his team to triumph, scoring an impressive 23 runs off just nine deliveries. In a quick display of power-hitting, he struck two massive sixes and two fours, dominating Archer by collecting 15 runs in just five balls.

The clash between Smith and Archer escalated during a fiery over at the Gabba, with Archer visibly frustrated after being hit to the boundary by Smith. The Australian skipper responded by aggressively dispatching Archer for a six over deep fine leg, further demoralizing England’s bowlers.

Continuing his onslaught, Smith smashed another six in the subsequent over to seal the game and propel Australia to a commanding 2-0 lead as they head to the next Test in Adelaide.

When questioned about the on-field exchange with Archer, Smith remarked, “That stays on the field. It was good banter. He’s a good competitor and comes hard at you so it was good fun.” The incident highlighted Archer’s frustration as he struggled with the pink ball throughout the Test.

England’s bowling attack, not living up to their potential as seen on day one in Perth, struggled against the Australian batsmen. Despite setting a chase target of 334 runs, England fell short, managing only 241 runs before being bowled out.

Travis Head and Jake Weatherald gave Australia a strong start in the chase, setting the stage for Smith to showcase his aggressive batting. Smith’s approach was to play attacking shots, taking advantage of the short boundary and the impending weather conditions to secure a quick finish.

Reflecting on the team’s performance, Smith praised the lower-order batsmen for their resilience in the first innings, which set up their victory. He acknowledged the partnership between Ben Stokes and Will Jacks but emphasized the importance of finishing off games quickly.

With Australia on the brink of retaining the Ashes, England faces a must-win situation in Adelaide, with the third Test scheduled to begin on December 17. Fans can catch all the live action of the Ashes series on TNT Sports via discovery+ or Prime Video’s TNT Sports channel.
