In recent years, food prices have been on a steady upward trend due to the ongoing cost of living crisis. This has become a common concern for many shoppers, who are increasingly faced with higher prices when they visit supermarkets for their favorite products.

To cope with rising costs, a growing number of consumers are opting for supermarkets’ own basic ranges over branded products in an effort to save money. However, this cost-saving strategy doesn’t always deliver the expected results, as evidenced by a recent visit to Marks & Spencer.

While M&S is typically known for its luxury offerings, shoppers have come to expect some affordable everyday items in their product range. For instance, the M&S Classic Mayonnaise, priced at £1.50 for a 500ml tub, compares closely to similar products from Sainsbury’s and Tesco.

However, a surprising discovery was made when exploring M&S’s new Only… Ingredients range, particularly with the Olive Oil Mayonnaise. Priced at a steep £4.50 for a 250g tub, featuring only six ingredients, this product raised eyebrows for its premium pricing compared to the Classic Mayonnaise.

Despite the Olive Oil Mayonnaise’s high cost, other products in the Only… Ingredients range remained relatively affordable. For example, the M&S Only 6 Ingredients 6 Heritage Gold Pork Sausages and M&S Only 5 Ingredients 4 White Rolls were priced reasonably compared to alternative options.

While the concept of simplifying ingredients in food products is commendable, the significant price disparity between the Olive Oil Mayonnaise and the Classic version has sparked discussions among UK consumers. The escalating cost of olive oil globally, combined with import-related factors impacting the UK market, contributes to the higher prices seen on supermarket shelves.

Factors such as reduced global supply due to poor harvests, supply and demand imbalances, higher import and supply-chain costs, currency effects, and retail pricing strategies all play a role in driving up the cost of olive oil in the UK. Despite these challenges, consumers continue to navigate the evolving food pricing landscape, seeking a balance between quality and affordability in their grocery choices.
