Andriy Shevchenko emphasized the importance of coming together “against the forces of evil” ahead of Ukraine’s match against France on the 10th anniversary of the terrorist attacks in Paris. The attacks in November 2015 resulted in 130 fatalities and over 400 injuries, with one person killed at the Stade de France. Shevchenko, the former AC Milan and Chelsea striker who is now the president of the Ukrainian FA, highlighted the significance of the upcoming World Cup qualifier, stating that it transcends mere football.
Reflecting on the tragic events, Shevchenko expressed solidarity with the French people, underscoring the shared understanding of the devastating impact of terrorist acts on innocent lives. He stressed the need to stand united against malevolent forces for the preservation of lasting peace and democratic values. Shevchenko’s return to Ukraine following the Russian invasion in February 2022 led to his assumption of the FA presidency in January the following year.
In a statement to L’Equipe, Shevchenko acknowledged the challenging period in Ukraine’s history and his commitment to supporting his country in its time of need. He outlined his primary objective of safeguarding Ukraine’s sovereignty and independence through his role at the Football Association of Ukraine (AUF). The former football star, who has deep Ukrainian roots despite past associations, emphasized the critical importance of Ukraine’s presence on the global stage and the potential sporting achievements that qualification for major tournaments can bring to the nation.
Looking ahead to the upcoming World Cup qualifier, Shevchenko emphasized the dual significance of representing Ukraine internationally and the positive impact such success can have on the development of Ukrainian football. With Ukraine currently trailing France in Group D and a crucial match against Iceland on the horizon, Shevchenko underscored the importance of securing qualification as a testament to the country’s resilience and sporting prowess.
Shevchenko’s dedication to Ukraine’s cause stems from his strong Ukrainian identity instilled by his upbringing. He emphasized the imperative of ensuring Ukraine’s continued existence as an independent nation amid challenges posed by external aggression. Ukraine, having previously qualified for the 2006 World Cup, aims to replicate its success under the guidance of coach Sergiy Rebrov and further enhance its footballing reputation on the global stage.
