Vanessa Big Eagle, a band councilor overseeing housing for the Pheasant Rump Nakota First Nation, faced significant damage due to severe weather that struck her community. The intense winds in May caused havoc, affecting 23 out of 54 homes in the area. Among the damaged properties, Vanessa’s own house suffered the most, with a substantial portion of the roof being blown off by the strong winds.
As a result of the damages, insurance claims have been filed for the affected homes managed by the First Nation. Many residences are still in need of repair, leading one family to seek temporary accommodation in a hotel. Vanessa expressed concerns about the recurring severe weather events and the financial implications for future budget planning.
Recent data reveals a surge in insured losses in Saskatchewan due to extreme weather conditions, potentially resulting in increased insurance premiums. Catastrophe Indices and Quantification Inc. reported that Saskatchewan experienced a record-breaking $450 million in insured losses from major weather events last year, the highest since data collection began in 2008. The most significant insured loss in the province was attributed to the extreme winds in June, totaling $240 million, followed by wildfires in the northern regions during the previous summer.
Laura Twidle, the CEO of Catastrophe Indices and Quantification Inc., highlighted the exceptional nature of the past two years in terms of insured losses. Jason Thistlethwaite, a professor at the University of Waterloo, emphasized the potential impact on insurance rates for all property owners, even those unaffected by recent disasters. He suggested a shift towards proactive measures to mitigate climate risks and reduce the reliance on post-disaster recovery efforts.
Repair companies in Saskatchewan, such as Leeway Mechanical Inc. and Fire & Flood, have reported a surge in demand for their services to address weather-related damages. From repairing roofs to addressing basement flooding, these companies have seen a notable increase in workload due to the rise in extreme weather incidents. The uptick in calls and the need for additional staff reflect the growing challenges posed by unpredictable weather patterns in the region.
