Sainsbury’s has decided to discontinue its Chop Chop rapid delivery app and merge its functionalities into the main Sainsbury’s app. Originally introduced in 2016, Chop Chop aimed to provide speedy grocery deliveries within 60 minutes for a premium fee, operating in 50 Sainsbury’s locations.

Regular users of the service may have observed that the standalone Chop Chop app has been phased out. Attempts to download it now redirect users to the primary Sainsbury’s app. Jim Banks, Sainsbury’s head of experience design, explained the decision in a LinkedIn post, stating, “Chop Chop is dead. Long live Chop Chop!”

The integration of Chop Chop into the main Sainsbury’s app was intended to simplify the shopping experience for customers. Banks highlighted the collaborative effort of teams in Experience Design, product, and engineering to achieve this transition, emphasizing the positive impact on streamlining the shopping process.

Chop Chop previously competed with Tesco’s Whoosh rapid delivery service, which boasts even quicker delivery times, sometimes as fast as 20 minutes. In other supermarket news from the UK, Co-op has disclosed plans to open 18 new or enhanced stores within the initial quarter of 2026.

The inaugural Co-op store of the year will be established in the new Willowbrook Park neighborhood in Didcot, Oxfordshire. Additionally, several stores will undergo renovations, such as the convenience store in Eastern Green, Coventry, and a franchise-operated site in Ealing, London.

Kate McCrae, Co-op Operations Director, articulated the company’s commitment to creating community-centric stores that cater to local needs and enhance the overall shopping experience for members and customers. The focus remains on offering quality products, value, and a variety of deals that align with shoppers’ preferences.

Co-op’s future initiatives include the creation of numerous apprenticeships, with a £70 million investment through its Levy Share service to establish 7,000 matched apprenticeships by 2030. This forward-looking approach aims to expand Co-op’s presence across various UK high streets and communities.
