Snooker icon Ronnie O’Sullivan has revealed he is now more discerning about the opportunities he pursues, recognizing the finite nature of his elite-level career. This strategic shift entails a reduction in exhibition matches for The Rocket, as he channels his energies towards competitive tournaments.
Approaching his 50th birthday in December, O’Sullivan, a seven-time world champion who recently clinched victory at The Crucible in 2022, has opted out of several events in the current 2025/26 season. Nonetheless, he did make an appearance in the final of the Saudi Arabia Snooker Masters in August, narrowly losing to Neil Robertson.
While exhibition games offer substantial financial rewards for top players, O’Sullivan has opted to limit these engagements, acknowledging the challenges of balancing them with tournament play. In a statement to Sportsboom, he explained, “I realized I couldn’t juggle the exhibition circuit alongside competitive matches. It was becoming too demanding. Despite the enjoyment they bring, I decided to focus solely on tournaments by clearing my schedule of all commitments, including exhibitions.”
Aware of the advancing stages of his career, O’Sullivan expressed realism about his longevity in the sport, estimating he may have only a couple more years at his peak. Grateful for supportive sponsors alleviating financial pressures, he emphasized the importance of dedicating his efforts to competitive play and reigniting his passion for the game.
Previously grappling with jetlag due to a hectic itinerary, O’Sullivan has relocated to Dubai to facilitate participation in Asian tournaments. Among these is the upcoming Xi’an Grand Prix in China, where he reached the semi-finals last year.
“As long as my sponsors continue to back me, I intend to keep competing,” remarked the 49-year-old. “My focus is on preparing for tournaments and rediscovering the love for the game that has been central to my career.”
The decision to move away from the UK was a recent development, though O’Sullivan had contemplated such a change for some time. Following a defeat to Zhao Xintong in the World Snooker Championship semi-finals in May, he shared his plans for a new chapter abroad, underscoring the need to evaluate his future in the sport amidst broader life considerations.
“I anticipate relocating to the Middle East soon to explore new opportunities,” O’Sullivan disclosed. “While uncertainty looms, I remain open to returning or embracing further changes down the line.”
