A mother recounts her challenges in accepting the loss of a limb after waking up to discover it had been amputated following a collision. Sharon Odell, 55, sustained severe injuries when her car was struck by another vehicle driven by Milosz Malkowski, 34. The incident occurred on the A170 near Thornton-le-Dale on April 17, 2024.

After the crash, Sharon was airlifted to the hospital and spent two and a half weeks in a coma. Upon waking up, she learned that her right leg had been amputated above the knee. She also underwent surgeries on her left leg and foot.

In a court hearing at York Crown Court, Mr. Malkowski was sentenced to 18 months in prison and a two-year driving ban for causing serious injury due to careless driving. Sharon, from Pickering, North Yorkshire, described the past year as traumatic.

Despite the challenges, Sharon has shown resilience and determination to rebuild her life. Her family’s unwavering support, especially from her husband and son, has been crucial. Sharon has returned to work as a teaching assistant, marking a significant milestone in her recovery journey.

Legal representatives at Irwin Mitchell secured financial support from Mr. Malkowski’s insurers for Sharon’s rehabilitation at STEPS Rehabilitation. She now has access to ongoing support, including a custom-made prosthetic leg.

Peter Lorence, Sharon’s legal counsel at Irwin Mitchell, acknowledged the difficulties faced by Sharon and her family. He emphasized the importance of early rehabilitation in Sharon’s remarkable progress. Sharon recently participated in a 5km parkrun with fellow patients from STEPS Rehabilitation, using a wheelchair for part of the distance.

By sharing her experience, Sharon aims to inspire others facing life-changing injuries and raise awareness about road safety. She hopes her story will encourage drivers to be more cautious on the roads to prevent similar incidents from happening to others.
