On Saturday, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) apprehended the individual responsible for what authorities termed as a “mass shooting” in Fort Smith, Northwest Territories. The arrest took place without incident around 4:30 a.m. MT on Sunday, with charges pending following further investigation. This suspect, along with two other persons of interest, was taken into custody the previous day.

Mayor Dana Fergusson expressed a sense of relief upon hearing the news. She highlighted the significance of removing another perpetrator from the community, emphasizing the peace of mind it brings to residents.

Apart from her mayoral duties, Fergusson also owns the bar where the shooting transpired and witnessed the incident. The altercation outside Dirty O’Fergies bar, occurring as the Fireweed Festival was concluding, resulted in gunfire and three individuals sustaining injuries. Subsequently, the community was placed under lockdown for over 13 hours.

Although the identities of the victims and the extent of their injuries remain undisclosed, Fergusson confirmed their evacuation for medical treatment outside the community. She reassured that the affected individuals, supported by their families, are on the path to recovery.

The law enforcement presence significantly escalated, with additional resources deployed from Yellowknife and Yukon to aid in the suspect’s apprehension. RCMP Inspector James Lai commended the tireless work of officers and specialized units in resolving the situation, emphasizing the commitment to Fort Smith’s safety and acknowledging the cooperation of residents and local leadership.

Following the lockdown’s lifting, community members rallied to assist one another, offering essential supplies and information. Fergusson lauded the town’s solidarity, exemplified by their mutual support during challenging times, fostering a strong sense of community.

The Fireweed Festival, postponed during the lockdown, resumed activities. Organizers, likening the festival to the resilient fireweed plant, expressed determination to flourish after adversity. As music returned to Dirty O’Fergies, the community united in a show of strength and solidarity.

Events continued into the following day, with organizers urging attendees to support vendors and artists impacted by the festival’s disruption. Fergusson, present at Queen Elizabeth Territorial Park, remarked on the lively atmosphere, contrasting it with the somber silence of the previous day, emphasizing the community’s need for joy and connection.

Authorities have called upon any witnesses to the pre-shooting altercation to come forward and cooperate with investigators at the Fort Smith RCMP detachment on Monday, between 1 p.m. MT and 9 p.m. MT.
