In a short span of time, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have experienced the departure of two key aides: Meredith Maines, the chief communications officer, and James Holt, who previously led their organization, Archewell.

Holt had been overseeing the couple’s public relations since 2019 before shifting his focus to the Sussexes’ charitable efforts post their royal exit in 2020. Maines, on the other hand, left her position after just 10 months with Harry and Meghan, making her the eleventh publicist to depart from their team within five years.

Following Holt’s resignation, it was revealed that he desired to spend more time in London with his family, expressing gratitude for the opportunity to work alongside the Duke and Duchess over the years. In a statement, Holt acknowledged the privilege of collaborating with the couple on various impactful projects.

Shortly after Holt’s exit, Maines also announced her decision to move on, highlighting her rewarding experience working with the Sussexes and Archewell, as she prepares to pursue new opportunities in 2026.

The turnover of communication staff within the Sussex camp has raised eyebrows, with past employees reportedly feeling the need for therapy and describing the environment as challenging and draining. Despite these claims, the Sussexes have denied any allegations of mistreatment.

Critics suggest that the couple’s unclear messaging and fluctuating public image may contribute to the high turnover in their PR team. As Harry and Meghan delve into various ventures, including collaborations with Netflix and engagements with Hollywood figures, their public approval has remained relatively low due to their critiques of the Royal Family and unconventional career choices.

As the couple seeks a new public relations representative, Liam Maguire, the UK and Europe communications director, is expected to take on a more prominent role in managing their publicity efforts. Amid uncertainties about their plans for 2026, the challenge of aligning their diverse initiatives and capturing public interest will likely persist for the incoming PR expert.
