A prominent physician involved in the conviction of Lucy Letby, a nurse who killed infants, is planning to transition into a career as a priest post his retirement from the NHS. Dr. John Gibbs, one of the first senior consultants to raise concerns about Letby at the Countess of Chester hospital, testified against her in court and expressed regret for not preventing her actions.

Despite initial convictions, subsequent reviews by international experts suggested that there was no deliberate harm done to the babies. Dr. Gibbs, who pursued a theology degree after retiring, has faced criticism from supporters of Letby who question the validity of his testimony.

Professor Richard Gill, a statistician advocating for Letby’s release, expressed disbelief at Dr. Gibbs’ career shift and suggested that hospital consultants tend to protect each other rather than reveal the full truth. Dr. Gibbs has been actively involved in his local evangelical church in Chester, as evident from a parish newsletter and an online sermon on medical ethics.

Meanwhile, Letby’s lawyer continues to present new evidence to challenge her convictions. A group of pediatric specialists and neonatologists concluded independently that no intentional harm was inflicted on the babies involved in the case. However, the families of Letby’s victims criticized these findings as biased and merely a repetition of the defense arguments from the trial.

Lucy Letby, currently serving multiple life sentences for the murder and attempted murder of infants, remains a focal point of ongoing legal challenges. Dr. Gibbs was contacted for his response to the situation.
