O2 has officially announced that millions of its customers are receiving a complimentary high-speed upgrade. This upgrade introduces faster 5G+ connectivity to users throughout the UK, providing improved mobile coverage and significantly quicker download speeds. O2 guarantees a 50% increase in performance compared to older 4G networks.
In addition to speed and reliability enhancements, users can expect longer battery life due to reduced power consumption as devices no longer require simultaneous connections to both 4G and 5G networks. Unlike traditional 5G, which relies on 4G support, the new 5G+ service eliminates this need.
The upgrade is currently being rolled out to customers with 5G+ compatible devices and SIM cards, with activation taking place in over 700 towns and cities. Christian Hindennach, Chief Commercial Officer at Virgin Media O2, emphasized that the 5G+ service is available to all O2 customers, regardless of their plan, setting it apart from other networks.
Hindennach stated, “The enhanced performance in busy areas, such as major venues with large crowds, benefits both residents and visitors. This upgrade underscores Virgin Media O2’s dedication to improving the network and providing a more reliable user experience, with a daily investment of £2 million to support customers in embracing the latest mobile innovations.”
To check local availability, users can visit O2’s website and enter their postcode. Some popular 5G+ compatible devices include the iPhone 15, 16 (including 16e), and 17 ranges, as well as the Google Pixel 9 series (including Fold) and Pixel 10 series (including Fold).
5G+ refers to an enhanced version of 5G technology that utilizes advanced features like higher-frequency spectrum, improved antennas, and network optimization to deliver faster speeds, lower latency, and increased capacity.
